The Crucible essay Essay Arthur Miller was an American writer in the 1940s and 50s. He wrote many plays and a few Hollywood movies, we were actually married to Maralin Monrome. In 1953 Arthur Miller wrote a play called The Crucible, the book is based on a true story about witchcraft in a town called Salem in 1692. The Crucible is inspired by the McCarthy trials which happened in the 1950s. During the McCarthy trials many people were dragged in front of John McCarthy and were forced to say names and if they refused they were black listed. So many innocent people had there careers ruined my john McCarthy. Since Arthur Miller wrote The Crucible there have been plays and even a film off The Crucible. I think that compared to modern day society this community is very disturbing indeed. In modern day society we learn that rumors are wrong and not to be believed or made up, however, in Salem it seems much the opposite. Every hint of a rumor is not even doubted and people seem compelled to believe them. Some of the rumors made up are ludicrous. How high did she fly, how high? shows Goody Putnams obvious belief of Mr. Collins rumor. The people in this town are so self-obsessed that they make up these rumors to make others look bad or at least worse than themselves. They are like monsters, which have targets and will destroy anything in their way to get to this target. The Devil seems to play a rather large part in their society. Anything linked to abnormality is linked to the devil. It is a marvel. It is surely a stroke of hell upon you, yet again an accusation of Goody Putnam that the Devil is upon Betty. It seems that Goody Putnam is having fun making these accusations, which could ruin Reverend Parris establishment in Salem. There is some history leading back to her accusing Parris household. Her brother, James Bailey, was sure to be accepted in to the Ministry of Salem. He had all the qualifications and a two-thirds vote in to the bargain, but a faction stopped his acceptance, for no clear reason. This is the reason for her resentfulness of Parris. She is described by Miller as a twisted soul of forty-five, a death ridden woman haunted by dreams. I can see his reasoning as she has laid to rest seven babies just because they withered in her arms, obviously a sure sign of the devil! After observing this one has to question her parental skills, maybe not a bad mother, but herself twisted by the devil. Reverend Parris is the Minister of Salem. He is in his mid-forties. He came from Barbados where he spent some years as a merchant. He continues professing how he left a thrifty business in Barbados to serve the Lord. He feels persecuted in Salem and indeed everywhere he goes. He feels like he has authority and is insulted if someone opens the door without his permission. He is a widower and has no care for children or any parental ability. However, he has a daughter, Betty, aged ten. He is very self-obsessed and only cares about his appearance to the community of Salem and tries to keep the respect he has built up for himself. Overall I think this book The Crucible is a strange but interesting book, it must of taken a lot of consideration to write a book like this, I did enjoy the book but I found it difficult to do the written work of it, mainly because it is extremely confusing. This essay will comment on the way that Daniel Day-Lewis plays John Proctor in Nicholas Hytners film of The Crucible. The first time we encounter John Proctor in the play is when Betty Parris is ill. John Proctor shows his power by telling Mary Warren to go home. This really shows the control that he has over her and that he has respect in the village. Now we see the first section with Abigail. It is done differently in the film to in the play as in the play they are by Betty Parriss bedroom but in the film they are outside behind a barn in the village. Johns reaction to Abigail is that he is lustful. He knows that his affair with her was wrong and that it would wreck his name in the village so he tells her that it is over. He denies the whole affair and tells her that it never existed. He does so that he knows that the affair never happened. When this scene is played in the film it is done behind a barn outside away from the other characters to give the effect that they are trying to hide something from the rest of the village. This shows us that he does still have feelings for her but he knows that he must hide it. John does still love his wife and he tells this to Abigail. This tells us that he was just having an affair and that he does still have feelings for his wife. John Proctor reaction to Abigail changes a lot throughout the play as at first he is lusting over her then he turns to calling her the devil. His change in opinion of Abigail is all due to the fact that she is insulting his wife and as I have said above John still loves his wife. Johns relationship with his wife Elizabeth is strange and it is easy to see the change between John and Elizabeth throughout the play. There are distinct sections in the play that highlight different attitudes between the two of them. When we first see them in this scene alone they are not very loving towards each other and do not talk as though they are interested. In the film the feeling between John and Elizabeth is shown in the way that their house is presented, it is dark and has a cold feel to it. This is exactly how John feels out Elizabeth. In the notes that Arthur Miller gives us in the play he says John gets up, goes to Elizabeth, kisses her. She receives it. With a certain disappointment, he returns to the table. This shows how John felt about Elizabeth it wasnt a passionate relationship but a very polite one they didnt really show emotion. A further time they are together, in a scene, is when Elizabeth is arrested. In this scene John shows how much he loves her. John becomes more involved in what is happening when someone that he loves is hurt. He is more irrational and is shouting and a real mess. In the film at this point Johns hair goes all over the place is shows that he is losing control of his life, his clothes are a mess and he is muddy and dirty this is a sharp contrast from the clean man earlier in the play when he first arrives to see Betty Parris. Then towards the end of the play you can really see the change in John and Elizabeths relationship it is clear to see the love between them as they share a long kiss in the film in front of everyone. They have clearly grown closer during the events that have happened this is a clear change in John from the beginning when he a Elizabeth were distant from each other they would only just share a peck on the check. There is now warmth in their relationship as appose to the cold relationship that they had before in the dark house they are now kissing in the sunshine outside. To continue on with the changes in John Proctor this essay will go on to look at how is relationship with the village and with the authority has changed through out the play. John Proctor start off in the play as very respected man in the village and surrounding area his name was good and so was his family. When we first see John Proctor in the film he is working out on his farm with his workers and his sons this gives the audience some respect towards him because he is a hard worker so you can feel what the towns people felt for him. John name went from being a respected man in the village to being accused of witchcraft. Johns opinion of the village change when he is accused of witchcraft and he losses the respect that he had before. Johns attitude to the court also changes a lot at first he respects them and honours them then when his wife is accused of witchcraft he becomes an enemy of the court. When his wife is arrested he takes Mary Warren into the court to tell them that the girls are making it up but she changes her mind half way through her confession and all the girls run outside into the lake to stop the devil getting them. John then follows and ends up in the river all by himself shouting at the other towns people he has changed and become outraged at them. The film shows John Proctor standing in the river looking very much like Jesus preaching to the people, which is strange since he is later accused of associating with the devil. One of the key changes in John Proctor is in his confession. There are two confessions that John makes. The first is about his affair with Abigail in which he tells every body in the court about it. This is a great change in John, as at the start of the play he was trying to cover it all up with Abigail and pretend that nothing happened now he is telling the court of what happened. Johns second confession is to admit to witchcraft, which he doesnt want to do, but does he gives in to what the law wants. Though he does confess to it he doesnt let them have the confession to show to town because he doesnt want his name to be wrecked. John is now in a real mess and is screaming and shouting and again he is muddy and messy in the film this is a good visual metaphor that shows his life falling apart and that he doesnt have control of it any more. When John Proctor goes to die he is a changed man. He has gone from being a good father, a good farmer, a good husband and a good towns person to being booed as he goes up to die for something that he didnt do and all because he loved his wife and not Abigail. John Proctors relationship with Abigail started off with some lust in it but that has gone and now he has seen what kind of person she is and how persistent she is get what she wants. Johns relationship with Elizabeth has got better throughout the play they have become closer as friends and closer as husband and wife. John changes a lot in his relationship with the village and the court in the village. In the end he disagrees with everyone in the court and everyone disagrees with him. The village believes that he is involved with witchcraft and he doesnt get a chance to prove them wrong. At his confession you can clearly see that he has changed a lot. It really is the final point to say that he has changed because of the fact that he is admitting to his affair with Abigail and at the begin he was trying to cover it up this proves how much of a change happened in his personality and his way of thinking.

Explication Essays - Writers, Igbo People, Fiction, Dead Mens Path Elisha Wallace ENGL 104, Sophomore Seminar I Explication The short story titled "Dead Men's Path" written by Chinua Achebe is about a man filled with hope trying to build a school which was once a ruin into a modern place of education. Even though he seemed to have good intentions his arrogance led him to fail and the short story ended with the school back to its unkempt state. The writer uses the priests dialogue to portray the theme of balance. My explication will be on the last six paragraphs of this short story in which Mr. Obi speaks to the priest and ignores his wise advice. This plot is a traditional "old versus new" where tradition goes head to head against modernization. In the end they realize that balance and a sense of understanding is what they need for peace. Mr. Obi is the new and young headmaster of Ndume school. He has a lot of ideas and changes he wants to make in order to elevate not only the school but the students as well. "Obi accepted this responsibility with enthusiasm. He had many wonderful ideas and this was an opportunity to put them into practice" (Kennedy and Gioia 187). One day Obi sees a woman crossing through the flowers in the compound and is informed that the village people cross through the compound to get to the burial. He blocks off the pathway and is quickly confronted by the priest. The priest is polite but firm in his opinion with Obi. He asks Obi for peace and balance in the hopes that Mr. Obi will open back up the pathway. But Obi is stubborn and insists that the village men and woman create a new way around th e school. "... I would suggest your constructing another path, skirting our premises I don't suppose the ancestors will find the little detour too burdensome" (Kennedy and Gioia 189). From this quote we can also see that Obi has a slight attitude and arrogance with his response to the old and wise priest. He is firm in his belief that the pathway is not of importance. A while later a young village woman dies and as a result the school is completely trashed and the protagonist, Obi, is left with a terrible review of his school. The setting of this short story contributed a great deal in developing the plot. The village is inferred to be small and tight knit with a strong sense of community. This helps readers understand why a large amount of the older village men and women are upset at Obi for blocking away the path to the burial. When the young woman dies it seems like effort of the community is what destroyed the school. "The beautiful hedges were torn up not just near the path but right around the school, the flowers trampled to death and one of the school buildings pulled down" (Kennedy and Gioia 189) "Dead Men's Path" is in third person omniscient. We can see that because the author uses words like he/she. This short story is omniscient because in one part of the story we can see the wife's point of view and how she thinks of her husband but the entire passage is usually in Mr. Obi's point of view. "He was stoop-shouldered and looked frail. But he sometimes surprised people with sudden bursts of physical energy" (Kennedy and Gioia 187). With this quote we get to see into the mind of the wife for just a moment. To find any symbols in this passage you really had to look deep and take everything as an interpretation of something else. I took the title, "The Dead Men's Path" as an object of symbolism. Not to describe the literal pathway to the burial ground but the path that Mr. Obi had chosen. The priest tried to show him the philosophy of balance. The philosophy of balance is an idea that shows up in many religions. It is the idea that you have to have a sense of balance in the world. Whether is be good and evil, right and wrong, or just simply up and down (Darren "The philosophy of balance").

Freedom and The Story Of An Hour      Ã‚  Ã‚   When I first read Kate Chopin's "The Story Of An Hour", my instinctual response was to sympathize with the character of Mrs. Mallard.   This seemed to me to have been intended by the author because the story follows her emotional path from the original shock upon hearing of her husband's supposed death to her gradual acceptance of the joy she feels in anticipating her new freedom to the irony of her own sudden death.   However, one fact cannot be overlooked when judging my personal reaction to this piece. Because this story's theme is basically an issue of what a woman has the right to expect from her life, the fact that I am a woman living in a society where freedom and independence are valued above all else weighs heavily on the way I look upon the actions of Mrs. Mallard and also on the way I judge Chopin's message.      Ã‚  Ã‚   It is interesting to note that even in the story's opening, before Mrs. Mallard's response has run it's full course,   her reaction to the news of the accident which is presumed to have killed her husband is already being contrasted to the one   which society would deem appropriate.   It is mentioned that "She did not hear the story as many women have heard the same, with a paralyzed inability to accept its significance"(pg 275, P3). Though upon discussion of the story I found that this sentence had placed a kernel of suspicion in the minds of some as to the authenticity of Mrs. Mallard's display of emotion, I had taken once, with sudden, wild abandonment"(pg 275, P3) endeared her to me all the more because I felt that it meant she was very much in touch with the workings of her heart andimmediately at their mercy, and this made her reacti... ....   As a woman who wants what these women wanted, I find this hard to grapple with.   I appreciate the fact that this story was written in a time when feminism was unheard of, but I wish that Chopin, who had been liberated enough to conceive of a character who would think like Mrs. Mallard, could also have imagined a situation in which she could have survived. Is It so Safe to Use Nuclear Energy? Essay

The fragile environment of our planet is now under threat. Carbon fuels such as coal and oil are running out and their emissions are destroying the ecosystem. To prevent the harmful effect on the environment, Dr Symonds discussed his view that nuclear power is the best affordable way to protect the nature of the Earth. Although the facts introduced at the conference were quite persuasive, there are some points to argue. There was a statement in which Dr Symonds proposed that nuclear energy is safe and environmentally friendly. It preserves fossil fuels and doesn’t produce greenhouse gases. As a result, we will have a chance to save the natural recourses of out planet and to prevent the destruction of the ozone layer. One more idea introduced at the conference was that nuclear energy is affordable for the policy of every country. Many nuclear power plants are already functioning and they are able to produce much more energy. This will shorten the sums of money spent annually on the environmental protection. To a certain limited extent the views of Dr Symonds can be true, but I would argue that the nuclear energy is as safe as he pleads. The radioactive waste and accidents on the plants are the major disadvantages of using it. The accident on one plant can cause a very serious harm and the consequences can be unpredictable. Moreover, the radioactive waste causes even more negative effect that the use of carbon fuels. To sum up, I would say that nuclear energy is not as safe and practical as Dr Symonds suggests. Some of its drawbacks can be even more harmful to the ecosystem of our planet than the usage of carbon fuels. In my opinion, other form of safe and affordable energy should be pursued.
